Wolves in the Lounge Room

A blog of my photographical adventures

Arial
April 2011

These three self-portraits were taken on a quiet day. I became curious to see what photographs of myself would look like from different angles, so I tied my camera to the light fixture and experimented with the timer feature.

My bedroom is the place I feel most at peace; it’s filled with light, has soft furnishings and is almost entirely monochromatic. I think the photos reflect that sense of calm I get from the space.

Rock the Bay
March 2011

Gig photography was always going to be a challenge - it’s exactly the kind of lighting you don’t want. Dark, indoors, changing lighting and lots of movement is a nightmare. I’m glad I stuck with it through the initial bad shots though, because I ended up with a few I really liked.

Bands include The Beards, The Tim McMillan Band and Barbarion.

Brickworks
February 2011

An abandoned brickworks site in Box Hill offers a great opportunity to get some shots. Roaming the site is quite eerie, but the dripping taps, flighty flocks of pigeons and disintegrating staircases that you could fall through at any moment all add to the excitement of a visit.

Horsham
February 2011

Visiting a friend of mine in her new place at Horsham made for a very relaxing weekend. She’s the first of my friends to get married, and seeing the beautiful life she’s creating for herself is so uplifting. I’m a bit manic when it comes to Twitter and Facebook, and although I had my iPhone, I banned myself from accessing the Internet while I was there - it let me live in the moment and appreciate the time we spent together.

First look
March 2011

Walking through Swinburne University’s new Advanced Technology Centre is a fascinating experience. The $140 million research and education centre was designed to be transparent; putting on show the research that is usually hidden from the public view.

SpiderFebruary 2011

I have a fascination with spiderwebs, so I couldn’t resist having a go at this one on my walk home from work one day. The thread was so fine that it has completely disappeared from the shot, making the foregrounded spider look exaggerated in size and bizzarely suspended in the air.

Hotel California
January 2011

In Hawthorn, there’s an abandoned set of flats charmingly named ‘Hotel California’, which used to be a place to stay but is now a graffitied, trashed mess of suites.

My photographically-minded friend Ed Taylor took me there for a shoot, and it was so eerie being in the deserted centre of such a busy, affluent suburb that I told him it felt like being in a zombie apocalypse. I almost expected ‘Plenty of room at the Hotel California…’ to start playing from one of the silent rooms.
